Sheer, cotton or blackout: which curtain suits which room
Light, privacy and heat behave differently in every room. A plain guide to picking the right weight for a Lucknow home.

Fabric weight is really a decision about light. Get that right and the room works; get it wrong and you end up drawing the curtains at the wrong times of day.
Sheer
A sheer filters daylight instead of blocking it. The room stays bright but nobody outside can read the details of what is happening inside — during the day. After dark, with the lights on, a sheer gives almost no privacy on its own.
Good for: living rooms, balconies, any window you want light from all day. Not good for: a bedroom used alone, or a ground-floor window facing a street.
Cotton and cotton blends
The middle ground, and what most homes end up with. A cotton curtain cuts glare, softens the room and gives real privacy, without making it dark.
Cotton also breathes, which matters more than people expect in a Lucknow summer — a synthetic curtain on a west window can hold heat against the glass.
Good for: bedrooms, dining rooms, study rooms.
Blackout
A blackout curtain has a dense weave or a backing layer. Used properly it takes a room to near darkness at midday.
Two things people do not expect. First, it needs to be wider and longer than the window or light leaks around the edges and the whole effect is lost. Second, it noticeably cuts the heat coming through a window that takes the afternoon sun.
Good for: bedrooms, a child's room, anywhere someone sleeps during the day, and any west-facing window in summer.
The layered answer
Most rooms are not one thing all day. A sheer behind a heavier curtain lets you have both: sheer alone in the morning, both drawn in the evening. It costs more, so it is worth doing in the rooms you actually sit in rather than everywhere.
A note on direction
In Lucknow the west-facing windows are the ones that punish you between March and June. If you only upgrade one room, start there.
